27th September 2025 - Sneak Peek

The next preservation update will target July 13th 2004, revision 245.
There is no ETA to give just yet, this is a sneak peek to share expectations.

Please please please help archive lost data, search your old family PCs! If data can't be found I'll have to try to recreate it, which is its own time sink to do correctly. The Roadmap post goes over what is currently archived.

This update has been worked on by:
Pazaz: Client decompilation, webclient port, server protocol, data tooling, unpacking data, Canifis interactions
Indio: Nature Spirit Quest, Canifis interactions, bank changes, bug fixes
Mr Ashie B: Priest in Peril Quest
The Sudden Silent: Researching spawns, gathering NPC information

Honourable mentions:
Tannerdino: Bug fixes for 244
Collin: Bug fixes for 244

July 13, 2004

Maps

We see the addition of the introduction to early Morytania, giving us access to Canifis and Mort Myre Swamp.

Quests

Priest in Peril: King Roald has had some issues being able to communicate with a priest to the east of Varrock. Better do a wellness check.

Nature Spirit: The aforementioned Priest wants you to check on a temple-goer. Be kind and bring some food to him.

Songs

Parade: You will unlock this track when you enter the new gate south of the Lumber Yard, and follow the path that has appeared.
You could get this already, but you didn't have much of a reason to walk north of the Dig Site!

Morytania: You will unlock this track when you approach the new Paterdomus Temple.

Mausoleum: You will unlock this track during Priest in Peril.
Remember to bring Rune Essence and save one trip!

Grotto: You will unlock this track during Nature Spirit.

Village: You will unlock this track when you enter Canifis.

Dead Quiet: You will unlock this track as you enter the Mort Myre Swamp.

Natural: You will unlock this track in the south-western area of Mort Myre Swamp.

Stagnant: You will unlock this track in the south-eastern area of Mort Myre Swamp.

Waterlogged: You will unlock this track in the north-eastern area of Mort Myre Swamp.

Shops

There are 3 shops in the new area, Canifis. They have a meat store, a clothes store, and a general store.

NPCs

Canifis villagers have a dangerous secret that I pray you don't find out. Avoid making them angry at all costs!

There is a Tanner in Canifis, perfect spot with the Bank nearby. You'll pay a pretty penny for the convenience.

There is an Inn Keeper in Canifis.

There is a man to the north-east of Canifis warning about the flooded path.

Changes

  • Banks get an Insert or Swap option to select from. Insert makes rearranging so much easier!

  • A few Banker NPCs get a Bank right-click quick option. Not all of them, strangely...

Bug Fixes

These are our mistakes and will apply to the current revision (244) and before.

These are still pending to be deployed to live. You should keep up to date on our PRs, it's all openly visible!

Client Improvements

I rewrote all of the input code to address some longstanding issues. These changes will be most noticeable on mobile devices.

  • There is improved device support across the board.
  • For devices that are capable of transitioning between touch and pointer inputs (i.e. tablets or phones with bluetooth mice), they will now work seamlessly.
  • Dragging items and scrollbars using touch is smooth and follows your movements.

These improvements are not live yet. More information on that in the future. Either it will be a silent update one day, or get released with the next version.

Here is a screen capture taken on iOS, scroll bars work equally as smooth:

Even Teslas can play soon -- enjoy the grind while supercharging!

377 Branch

Some of you may have seen I dedicated some time to make a 377 branch (May 2006). I decompiled that client, unpacked the cache data, and updated our server engine. This branch existing does not mean 2004 or 2005 are suddenly done or getting skipped over.
It takes time to do the technical side before even getting to the content.

By having the last revision in this engine version running, I can reduce how much I'm bottlenecking people from contributing with their hobby time :) This urgency on parallelizing effort gets more important as history becomes lost or overwritten.

Remember that we are doing this for the future, it is just a benefit we all get to experience it together now.

Indio, Tannerdino, Pretentious, Branon, Mr Ashie B, and Trufitus have already gotten a head start writing later stuff! Whoa!

Next Next Update

When KQ? When Slayer? When Barrows?

After 245 we have to pick the next revision that has enough data available, and revise all 50+ quests to add the help journals for them. Right now we're researching, compiling information, and I cannot set any expectations yet.

Talk about this with us on the forums. That is, if you want to be a part of the community and get to talk directly with me, other git contributors, and your fellow players ;)
